Cooperative of Haiti uses Brazilian mini factory for cashew nut processing
01/08/2009
Installed in December / 2009, the factory was developed by the Brazilian Company of Agricultural Research (Embrapa) and donated to the Haitian cooperative by the federal government.
As the state-owned company, the model propitiates a low cost production and it will make possible the insert to the market of small producers that now just supply the chestnut in natura for the great industries.
At first, the machine should benefit 700 people of Big-Rivière-du-Nord, that it is 300 kilometers to the north of the Haitian capital, Porto Principe. However, for researcher Fabio Paiva, of Embrapa Tropical Agribusiness, that headquarter is in Fortaleza, the Brazilian action can serve as incentive for other actions in the same direction. He was in Haiti between the 6 and December 19 accompanying the installation of the equipments.
“In that area are has several NGOs [no-government organizations] with resources that can acquire new mini factories. We see that project as a demonstrative unit to motivate the production. We hope that the prived initiative and the government are also motivated and use this model in the country, that is needing help”, said Paiva.
The medium value of a plant as the one that was donated by the Brazilian government is of US$ 60 thousand.
As the researcher, nowadays the chestnut is benefitted in precarious hygienic conditions. Even so, the Haitians get a good price for the product, about of US$ 20 / kilo. With the new technology, the chestnut can be presented with better quality. The equipments present indexes of up to 85% of whole almonds, while in the automated cut of the traditional industries the average is of 55%.
Paiva said that the mini factories can also benefit banana, adding more value to that fruit, produced in Haiti. In relation to the in natura chestnut, the daily capacity of processing is of 500 kilos. After the installation, 30 people were trained to operate the machines.
The cooperation project, called Transfer of Technologies in Systems of Production and Processing of Cashew, it is coordinated by the Brazilian Agency of Cooperation (ABC), for the Embassy of Brazil in Haiti and for the Haitian government, through the Ministry of the Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development, with resources of the Program of the United Nations for the Development (Pnud).
