Brazil enlarges honey exports in 2008

01/23/2009
The year of 2008, even full of challenges for the honey section Brazilian, it finished with positive values and record price. The section doubled the value of the exports, reaching US$ 43,57 million, and it increased in 42% - 18,27 thousand tons - the volume negotiated  in relation to 2007, when 12,9 thousand tons were marketed, with revenue of US$ 21,2 million.

The largest increment in the exported values, when compared with the amounts, is due to the fact of the medium price obtained by the Brazilian honey in 2008, US$ 2,83 / kilo, it was it louder of the history of the Brazilian exports. That price overcame the US$ 1,64 / kilo paid for the product in 2007, as well as it broke the record of the year of 2003, that it was of US$ 2,36 for kilo.

Among the challenges confronted last year can stand out the end of the European impediment to the Brazilian honey, happened in March. Due to that, the section, that is the 11st world producer of honey and the ninth largest exporter, needed to implant Good Practices and the System of Analysis of Dangers and Critical Points of Control (HACCP/APPCC) in the warehouses and honey houses, besides execute the registration  to the Ministry of the Agriculture, Livestock and Provisioning.

Destinies - in spite of the economical crisis, the United States was the main destiny of the Brazilian exports in 2008. The country answered for 73,1% of the marketed total, with an income of US$ 31,84 million, to the price of US$ 2,32 / kilo of honey.

With Germany, Brazil marketed US$ 7,188 million, in other words, 16,5% of the exports, at a price of US$ 2,66 per kilo. The third market buyer of the Brazilian honey was Canada, that answered for 5,3% of the sales (US$ 2,308 million), with a medium price of US$ 2,57 per kilo of honey.

Wax and Propolis - The export of bee wax had reduction of 1,3% in value and of 18,4% in weight in the comparison of 2008 with 2007. Of the marketed total (US$ 4,27 million), more than 87% had as destiny Japan.

The second I destine of those exports was China (US$ 373,5 thousand), although that country has reduced in 32,4% the imports in the comparison with 2007. The leadership in the export of that product was of São Paulo State, following by Minas Gerais.

In the case of propolis exports, there was an increase of 156% of income in the comparison with 2007. They were exported US$ 114,398 thousand in 2008 against US$ 44,681 thousand. Minas Gerais State assumed the leadership in the export of that product, following by São Paulo, Piauí and Rio Grande do Sul.

Challenges for 2009 - in agreement with Reginaldo Resende, the section needs to overcome to strong dependence of the market. Situation that becomes worse with to growing participation of Canada, Russia and India in that same market. "Besides, due to the possibility of aggravation of the recession in the American economy, the need of new markets is very important", says.

Therefore there is a great need of an effort between the public and private sections to accelerate the return of the honey exports to the European market. There is still the search of the internal market as alternative and support for the exports. The idea is to enlarge the honey consumption in the Country, considered low - 128 grams of honey per inhabitant a year. "In developed countries that consumption is of more than a kilo per person a year", says Reginaldo. (ASN)
