Brazil: organic by nature
03/18/2009
A record number of Brazilian companies are taking part in the Nuremberg BioFach 2009, under the umbrella of the Organics Brasil Project; Brazilians will occupy 5 stands in cosmetics area
Consolidating its position as one of the biggest suppliers of organic raw materials in the world, Brazil arrives at the sector’s largest and most important fair, BioFach, with 32 companies – a record number for the country. Also for the first time, Brazil will be occupying five (5) stands in the Vivaness Pavilion, which is exclusively dedicated to cosmetics. With an optimistic outlook, the Brazilians will be side by side with 1,200 other companies from 116 countries, exhibiting their wares from 19th to 22nd February, in Nuremburg, Germany.
“The outlook for 2009 continues to be positive, despite the current cooling down of the global economy”, believes Ming Liu, the Executive Coordinator of the Organics Brasil Project. His reasons for this optimism will be explained at the “Brazil: More than just a supply market” lecture, scheduled for 3pm on 20th February, at BioFach Special Congress, Hong Kong Room. “Brazil is more than simply an agricultural producer and extractor of organic foodstuffs”, he says, going on to explain, “the country is also a supplier of high aggregate value of natural, processed and industrialised products that stands out due to its concept of sustainability for ethnic communities and cooperatives”.
In 2008, the 64 companies associated with the Organics Brasil Project exported US$ 58 million to 70 countries, a 176% increase compared to 2007 (see the table below) and which is reflected in Brazil reaching 3rd position in the world – recently announced by IFOAM – for the certified organics sector, with 1.8 million hectares. Since the beginning of this year, six (6) new companies have joined the project, making for a total of 70 associated companies ranging from extractors to small rural producers, from factories to export companies. The products that most stand out are: alcoholic (cachaça) and non-alcoholic (teas, coffee and juices) beverages; raw materials for cosmetic products; raw materials and ingredients from the Amazon (andiroba); exotic ingredients (camu-camu, cupuaçu); fruit (açai, guaraná, grape, pineapple); vegetables and beef. And, Brazil’s certification and tracking mechanisms enable the country to expand its export base.
Organics Brasil Project was created to promote Brazil’s organic products in the international market, uniting companies and producers under the banner of a single brand whilst attending the strictest socio-environmental suitability standards. The Organics Brasil Project is the result of a combined action from the private initiative (the Institute for the Promotion of Development and the Federation of the Industries of the State of Paraná) and a governmental agency (Apex-Brasil – Brazilian Agency for the Promotion of Exports and Investment), comprising a solid institutional base whose aim is to strengthen the Brazilian organics sector and encourage its growth in the international market.
