Braskem will produce biodegradable plastic in wide scales

The Brazilian company Braskem will produce 200 thousand tons of raw material annually for the production of plastics from the sugarcane, a material totally biodegradable that can be decomposed in the nature one year after discarded.

The traditional plastic, that has the petroleum as raw material, it takes more than 200 years to degrade completely. Other companies also use  technologies for production of biodegradable plastic in the country, but it is is the first experience in wide scale.

The unit should be concluded in the end of next year and it will consume investments of R$ 500 million. According to the responsible for the commercialization of green polymeric of Braskem, Luiz Nitschke, that will be the first operation in commercial scale in the world of the production of green polyethylene from raw 100% renewable material.

Nitschke informed that the production will be destined to the market of the alternative product, that it consumes 70 million tons of polyethylene in a year all over the world.

The biodegradable polyethylene will be produced from a synthesized resin of the ethanol and it will allow the production of tanks of fuel for vehicles, films for disposable diapers,  yogurts, milk bottles, shampoo bottles and detergent bottles.

The polyethylene is supplied to the industry in form of balls that are then transformed in the packings or in pieces for several purposes, as for the toys industry.

Nitschke affirms that to use alcohol to produce polyethylene it won't provoke impact in the production of sugar or fuel, tends in view the potentiality of Brazil in that area. The country, as it detached the executive, produces 500 million tons of sugarcane a year and practically half is going to the industrialization of the ethanol and the remaining 50%, for the production of the sugar.

The plant that Braskem will have working next year will involve the initial use of 400 million liters of alcohol.

He said, still, that the enlargement of the potential of production of the factory of green polyethylene of Triunfo, next years, will depend on the demand of the international market. Nitschke reminded that the green polyethylene substitutes the raw material originating from reservations fossils offering a product of renewable source and that it fastens the carbon gas with the synthesis of the resin obtained for the production of the polyethylene. The biodegradable plastic liberates carbon gas and water when it is decomposed and it doesn't liberate poisonous substances. (ABr)
